Isn’t it awesome when you pop a flick into your dvd player in the middle of Horrorthon thinking your about to take another one for the team and it actually turns out to be good. That’s exactly what happened here. The film starts with Halloween decorations adorning a neighborhood and trick or treaters are running about setting the perfect mood for a seasonal film. Chris finds an invitation to a Halloween murder party on the street and being that he has nothing better to do than to spend an evening watching horror movies with his cat (sounds like my average October night) he decides to whip up a quick costume and go for it. Upon arrival he is jumped and tied to a chair where he quickly realizes that he is at a real murder party and he is the intended victim. What follows is an intelligent and often witty play on a sticky situation. The group of prospective murderers begins to harp on existing issues amongst themselves which in turn triggers a whole bunch of unexpected mishaps all the while Chris is trying desperately to find some way out before he meets his demise but really, he's not all that bright.

What an unexpected treat, Murder Party takes an intellectual stab at the New York art scene and does it with humor and finesse. Most of the film relies on strong dialog rather than massive bloodshed like many low budget films. The bantering between the artists who have decided to commit this murder is quite laughable as they try to one up each other. Nothing goes as planned and the night progressively gets more interesting as it goes on. Although three quarters of the film deals more with the personalities of the players and the escalating situation, fear not fans of blood and gore. The film rolls quietly into an unexpected blood soaked finale. A really fun watch.
