(1977) ***
Based on a Dean R. Koontz novel, Proteus, an organic super computer is created by scientist Alex Harris. Proteus runs everything in their ultra modern home, the convenient wave of the future. But Proteus begins to get curious about human life and decides he wants to be immortalized. He traps Alex’s wife Susan Harris in their home and holds her captive. Being organic he has figured out how to impregnate her so that his legacy can contue on into a new race of super intelligent beings. Susan is left with no choice but to reluctantly play along since Proteus has threatened to murder those close to her if she doesn’t.
Very interesting take on the super intelligent computer take over. This film oozes of 1970’s scifi. The computer voice sounds like something straight out of Space 1999, actually the whole film feels like it could fit in as an extended episode if only Maya, Commander Koenig and Dr. Helena Russell had shown up to save the day. I bet Maya could have shifted into mouse and chewed up his wires. Anyway the idea of this is great and the process of the machine impregnating her was so clinical and creepy, it was one of those things where you want to look away but for some reason you just can’t. This is one of those films I would actually like to see remade today, the modern technology would make it much more believable and if done right could be seriously hard core.
